There are many more movies and television shows addressing the long goodbye of Alzheimer's. There are also more products and services on the market to help caregivers cope and provide loving support to their loved one. I'm so aware that we were lucky my mother's mood and affect were still sunny and positive before she got sick with Covid. Maybe the most consistently chipper I had ever known her to be! So that is the Mommy I think of on her anniversary. I remember how much she loved her grandkids and being a grandmother was like a calling for her. I honor that whenever I'm enjoying the company of young children. I hope she has the peace and reward of being with my father, with all her siblings and her Mom, with friends and dogs she loved dearly. 4 Years gone.

Grace, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Having met your mom briefly a few years ago when she visited the CDA with you, I can truly say she was mild-mannered, loving and cheerful. Keep her memories alive. Those we love are forever in our hearts.

I remember meeting your mom when she was visiting Atlanta. She was so robust and full of life. Her smile and sense of humor were obvious even in a short meeting. I'm so sorry for you and your family for your loss. May prayers of healing and happy memories help your healing.

I had the honor of knowing Cuchy for almost 50 years. Met her when Adrianne and I were in kindergarten together. She was basically a part of my educational years because we, A, Gigi and I also went to grammar school and HS together. She pushed us to be better and to never give up! I also worked with her at Isham Park Pharmacy. She was so good with all of our customers! She knew what they wanted even before they enter the place! She was one of the most amazing women that I have ever met and I am thankful that she was part of my life! She was like a second mother to me! RIP Cuchy

To my TT Cuchy and her daughters Grace (GG) Adrian and son Alberto, I love you all with all my heart and morn greatly, the loss of your mother. She was such a large part of my life in the early days. And with you my cousins it was if we were more like brothers and sisters than cousins. More importantly I have always thought of you as friends.

God brings people together in family, with no choice of how or who we are related to But even if we weren't connected by the blood of your mother my moms sister, I would have wanted you people in my life, by choice. I honestly have never known finer people with so much love, than you all have.

Your mother and father both are responsible for most of that but it's your inner selves, that are a reflection of the Almighty, that shines through. Thank you for having been in my life.

Ruthy, Cuchy daughter to Altita, wife to Pepino and mother to the above adult children and my aunt, till the day we all meet in Heaven KNOW that I love you and always have and always will. Goodby and may God keep your soul for us, till we meet again.

I met Ruth once, and will not forget her. I am so grateful to get this glimpse into her life. She was an extraordinary woman, and her daughters are also. What love, planning and care went in to getting her to a place of safety and happiness when she was transported to the facility where she spent the end of her life. I love seeing the photos posted. What a beautiful spirit she (and your dad) had. I pray for those who remain, as Ruth is already with her loved ones who have reached there before her. Sending much love.

This wonderful lady was a God sent to the Franco family. Cuchy was my mother's mentor, counselor, and English interpreter. Cuchy was the instrument God used to get my brother and I enrolled in Good Shepherd. Cuchi was the one who would drink coffee with my mom make her laugh while Cuchy's dog, Duchess, would stand by her side. Cuchi was a funny, hospitable, understanding, and overall caring individual. Pepino and Cuchi will always be remembered and I know they are now in heaven having coffee with my mom and Duchess by their side.

Blessings to Ruth's soul as she meets with her beloved husband and our maker. I loved visiting the Attanasio home as a child and an elementary school friend of Gigi. It was astonishing to me at the age of 9 or 10 that she had a collection of unopened toys tucked away, high in her closet, to choose from to give as gifts for future birthdays or celebrations.  Barbie dolls, board games, etc.! As an adult, I was able to write and call her at least once a year and we'd talk for 20 - 30 minutes at a time. She loved to talk about her wonderful son-in-laws, her beautiful grandbabies and then of course her daughters.  We also spoke a lot about our wonderful Italian-born husbands and how dedicated they were to family, food and good wine. Such a wonderful legacy of a true New Yorker, mom, grandma and friend. My condolence to her loved ones. May she RIP! Encore!!!

Her Life

Early Life

April 3, 2020
Ruth Dalia Negroni "Cuchy" was born the second daughter of Juan Negroni and Altagracia "Altita" Ruiz in Ensenada, the Guanica county of Puerto Rico in 1936. Along with her sisters, Nydia, Emma and Teresa, Ruth spent her early days on her maternal grandparents farm. Around age 7, Ruth and her sisters came to New York City with their father, Juan, to an apartment in Hell's Kitchen (West side of Manhattan, 56th Street). Meanwhile, Ruth's mom had been employed as a Nanny to a wealthy Chicago Department Store family, earning and saving to reunite with her daughters. Ruth's parents were divorced and her father had remarried someone his daughters did not get along with too well. Ruth often told of the day her Mom finally came to NYC to gather "her girls" and how elated they were to see her. The Negroni Ruiz girls moved to the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. A loving support network of aunts was developing and Ruth was surrounded by love, humor and grit.

Adolescence/Young Adult

April 8, 2020
Ruth was known to many as "Cuchy" (KOO-chee). It was a nickname formed by her sister, Emma, mispronouncing "Ruthie" and it stuck. Ruth often told us stories about growing up in Brooklyn and Hell's Kitchen. She had her sisters and also many aunts she adored. Our grandmother, Altagracia Ruiz, had numerous sisters that were varied in age and stage of life and some were young enough to even visit the ballroom dances Ruth and her sisters used to go to. Ruth had to learn English at school and often said she learned quickly because she had no other choice. Although Ruth left school to join her mother and aunts in a candy box factory, she later got her GED (and was very proud of it).  She had numerous suitors in these days and was even engaged at one point. However, Ruth always sought her mother's approval and advice and ultimately stayed single into her twenties. One light in her life was the birth of Ruth's nephew, Tommy. Ruth was a caregiver for him in his early years and cherished that time she had with him.

Love and Marriage

April 8, 2020
During her factory work, Ruth's friends encouraged her to apply to be a switchboard operator at AT &T on Canal Street in NY. She got the job and was highly favored at work because she was bilingual. This also meant that Ruth was working the switchboard in which calls from Europe would be "put through" to locations in Central and South America. A widower named Giuseppe was also working for the phone company, Italcable. Operators used to talk to each other to get calls patched through and over time, Giuseppe ("Peppino"), in his 40's and Ruth Dalia, in her 20's,  struck up a friendship. She got to know that he lost his wife to cancer and was living in Rome, Italy, with his parents and  young son, Alberto. They wrote MANY letters to each other and over time, began to fall in love. Peppino asked if he could come to New York and take Ruth to the World's Fair Exhibit in Queens circa 1964. When he came to visit, Ruth's mother thought he was "too old" for her daughter but Peppino persevered through respect and humor. He proposed to Ruth Dalia and they were married September 30th, 1965. Their first child together, Grace, was born the following October, 1966. Adrianne, their second daughter, was born two years later in August, of 1968. Adolescent Alberto was their big brother and they lived together in an apartment at 103 Vermilyea Avenue. On the main floor of that building, lived Ruth's mother, Altita, and on the 2nd floor, Ruth's sister, Emma Alfieri. Inwood Heights was their beloved community. Peppino formally became a citizen and changed his name, officially, to Joseph Attanasio. Ruth was a mother at home but active in the community and school events for her children. Cuchy and Peppino's marriage of 19 years was ended abruptly by his death in 1985, at age 65. Ruth continued to live in the same apartment and thrive in the Inwood community despite this loss.

I was lucky enough to meet Ruth over the years knowing Grace and Scott. She always carried a huge smile, a warm hug and plenty of kind words. Ruth gifted us a week in her vacation home in Florida and it turned out to be the week of our 1 year wedding anniversary... so generous and we were and are so grateful to have that memory. Ruth obviously lived to be her best as she mother her two beautiful daughters. I’m truly a better person after sharing time with her... so share a smile, a hug and kind word to everyone you meet! Big HUG back to you Ruth!
